About
Ibrahim Fawzy
Greetings! I’m Ibrahim Fawzy, a native of the captivating Fayoum Oasis in Egypt. With an MA in comparative literature, I'm privileged to share my knowledge as a lecturer at Fayoum University. My passion for the literary world finds expression in my engaging podcasts on the prestigious New Books Network.
As a literary translator, I navigate the worlds of Arabic and English with finesse. Translation, to me, is an art that breathes life into stories, showcasing the resilience and defiance inherent in literature. My focus is on bringing to light narratives from Africa and the SWANA region, ensuring their reach to broader audiences.
My translations have graced the pages of esteemed publications such as ArabLit Quarterly, Words Without Borders, The Markaz Review, Modern Poetry in Translation, Poetry Birmingham Literary Journal, Poetry Ireland Review, and various others. This summer, I eagerly anticipate the release of my first monograph, Belonging to Prison, published by Cambridge Scholars.
Passionate about fostering literary communities, I have dedicated my time as a volunteer at ALTA’s 44th annual conference and have participated in numerous readings, including the esteemed PEN Women in Translation series. In 2023, I had the pleasure of completing a transformative six-month mentorship with the esteemed British National Centre for Writing (NCW) through their Emerging Literary Translators program. Also, I’m a two-time graduate of the British Center for Literary Translation (BCLT) Summer School.
I was shortlisted for Deep Vellum's The Best Literary Translations 2024 Anthology. Furthermore, my translation of Khalid Al-Nasrallah’s The White Line of Night earned me the esteemed 2023 English PEN Presents award. As an editorial assistant at Rowayat, a Canada-based literary journal, an editor-at-large at Asymptote, and a devoted podcaster at New Book Network (NBN), I continue to immerse myself in the literary landscape.
When I'm not engrossed in the world of literature, I find solace in caring for my beloved pets. My academic interests encompass political prison literature, postcolonial literature, YA literature, ecocriticism, and the captivating realm of hydrofiction.
